What factors must be considered when creating APIs? How can we guarantee quality and security? This live event will teach you everything you need to know about API Design, GraphQL APIs and API management. Three API experts will spend the afternoon discussing the design and professional use of APIs, sharing valuable insights gained from years of practical experience. The experts will discuss fundamentals and strategies, as well as classify the latest API development trends. During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions via the live stream chat feature.
Prior to implementing an API, it is essential to think about the API’s design. And like all other artifacts of software development, this design should also be subjected to an expert’s review. What should be paid attention to? Which qualityfeatures can be ensured even in this early phase, and which pitfalls can be avoided? This talk provides valuable advice from many years of practical work on HTTP-based APIs.
With the GraphQL query language, clients can select and request specific data from the server. In this talk, I will show you the basics of GraphQL APIs: what makes them special, for which use cases are they best suitable and, of course, how the query language works. We will also see to what extent popular statements about GraphQL, such as “alternative to REST” or “SQL” for the frontend” are true. To get an impression of how you can implement GraphQL APIs for your application yourself, we will look at a few code examples in Java, which you will understand even without Java knowledge. You can transfer the concepts demonstrated to other GraphQL frameworks in other programming languages.
API management has been changing over the last few years. We’re witnessing an proliferation of APIs, both on the provider side where more and more business models have APIs as part of their overall strategy, and on the consumer side where using APIs becomes very much standard practice in software engineering. What does this mean for API management and what are the big trends we can identify in the API management landscape? We’ll discuss three important trends: One is the trend towards federated API management where increasingly, multiple technical API management solutions have to be unified into one coherent view of an API landscape. The second is the unbundling of API tooling where we’ll see more and more tooling being available which needs to interoperate to allow users to combine them for their specific API management needs. The third one is API governance which increasingly becomes an essential aspect of API strategy, helping an organization to manage and evolve its API landscape in a coherent and scalable way.
